Second Avenue (July 2004)

Walk with the beggar of Second Avenue
To the edge of a street
In tattered khakis and greasy hair
With a cardboard sign of promises.

Stand in wait of Generosity,
While jobs and cars pass him by,
In an endless cycle of tramping
With a secret itch beneath shirt sleeves.

Most never acknowledge him
As they stop at the light and turn
In the city that never rests
With the skyscrapers of indifference.

Amass the cash from strangers,
Smiling and nodding all the while,
In deceit and disguise
With a drug addiction behind lies.

Steal away with the vagabond of Second Avenue
Into the darkness of night
In this straggling cycle of addiction
With a cardboard sign of promises.
