Belong Not to Winter (February 2005)
We see the dying trees
As they reach for uncaring clouds
In the lifeless world outside,
Where the ground is veiled in snow shrouds.
But this home on the hill
Stands in strong protest
Alive against frost’s will—
Swelling in might.
For in this home, there is life—
That burning fire, my heart,
Which winter cannot touch
Or of its ice impart.
In this home on the hill,
Hopes grow among the ice—
Dreams sculpted in beauty until
We believe them as truth.
Light the snowdrifts stole,
And life is gone for some;
But in this house, we dance and laugh
At the cold beyond.
