Conversion to a Semi-Tumblelog

Date: July 23, 2008

For the last week or so, I’ve been working on converting this website into a partial tumblelog. I really should thank Ben Gray and Shawn Anthony for their posts about creating a tumblelog with WordPress. I’ve done this, because I wanted to present content on the homepage differently, more interestingly, and I think the tumblelog format is a cool one to do just that. In the process, I scrapped a lot of old categories, in favor of a select handful. As one can see on the homepage, content from each category is displayed slightly differently now; meanwhile, the entry pages remain the same. Here are the current categories:

Society is perhaps the broadest of the categories, encompassing my entries concerning issues of politics, media/new media and morality. Quotes and Pictures are the newest and most different categories. I have gone back a year and properly categorized those entries. Entries made prior to June 2007 will be unorganized until I find a good and efficient way to batch edit entries in the latest version of WordPress.

The reason for this conversion is that I find that with the less time I have, the less likely I am to adhere to previously-successful posting norms, like Hump Day Funnies, MP3 Thursdays and so on. That method of writing was good for me for a long while, but now I cannot so easily commit to certain days, and postdating material is easier sounding than it actually is (i.e., I have to find that material to postdate!). A tumblelog will enable me to post a little more flexibly, and users will be able to navigate to their favorite content more easily on the homepage.

I have also changed the RSS feed to show the category of a post before its title. This is to avoid confusion about what sort of entry you are viewing in your feed readers if you subscribe to my general/overall site feed (and most of you do). I know in the past some of you have thought my fiction was reality! That should clear things up!

I’ve also very shamefully added Twitter.

Enjoy the new style! Feedback is welcome, as always.

Seven Random Bits About Me

Date: July 2, 2008

Edrei tagged me, and so I will tell you seven random things about wonderful, awesome and amazingly infallible me.

1. I sometimes have too many interests. About the only things that don’t get me tingly are mathematics and most all classical literature.

2. I have worked as a baseball bat inspector. It’s one of my cooler, more random stories to tell. I also liked that job better than working for a newspaper.

3. I am officially engaged, and there is a very good chance we’ll get married in Vegas.

4. I think rickrolling is great.

5. This isn’t my only website. I write under multiple pseudonyms about a number of different things.

6. For my innocent-spirited friend’s 21st birthday, I pranked her with a gift of a giant 9.5″ black…apparatus. She was very embarrassed.

7. I play TF2 a lot. My username’s leliathomas on Steam.

I tag…whoever wishes to tell me or anyone else seven things about themselves. You can in the comments or on your own website. :)
