The gov’ment be wastin’ our money again. Why is anyone really surprised?
Date: October 4, 2007
Federal employees wasted at least $146 million over a one-year period on business- and first-class airline tickets, in some cases simply because they felt entitled to the perk, congressional investigators say.
A draft report by the Government Accountability Office…is the first to examine compliance with travel rules across the federal government following reports of extensive abuse of premium-class travel by Pentagon and State Department employees…..found 67 percent of premium-class travel by executives or their employees, worth at least $146 million, was unauthorized or otherwise unjustified.
Among the worst offenders: the State Department, whose employees typically fly abroad on official business.
Many of the cases involved high-ranking senior officials or political appointees who claimed exceptions to federal travel rules by citing old medical records or questionable approval from a subordinate employee. –”Report: Millions wasted on gov’t travel” (AP)
Okay, firstly, is it just me, or does anyone else find it humorous that there is a “Government Accountability Office,” and it’s run by Congress? I don’t know about you, but I think Congress is pretty corrupt as well. They’re likely just reporting this, because they’re pissed off they didn’t lie this well in the past year. Wonder how much they spent on the report.
But $146 million? Wow, just wow. That’s what big, inept government gets you, though, folks. Congratulations. Yet, there is hope! I’ve a proposition!
Since America’s so fond of making laws and getting lawyers involved in even the smallest of issues, I propose we set higher standards for investigating the right these bastard politicians and officials have to be in a class any higher than economy, if the money being used is obviously in connection to the government, i.e., your tax dollars or your children’s debts. (Of course, the personal accounts of these slime balls cannot and should not ever be in question, as much as we’d like for them to be.)
I personally think if their excuses don’t check out, they should be denied access onto the plane until they, themselves pay for the upgrade. Otherwise, they can just strap into the hell that is economy, just like the rest of us, with fat passengers beside them and babies bawling.
I would like to get the names of these political officials, wouldn’t you? They are technically stealing, and I don’t take kindly to that personally. Neither does the law.
On a final bit:
The latest GAO report noted that several government entities are not subject to government rules on premium-class travel — among them, the U.S. Postal Service, Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. — opening up more opportunities for unnecessary waste.
I guess the man who prints the money doesn’t have to be held accountable.
