Behind the Art: Free

Date: January 22, 2007

This is slide show of me creating a photo manipulation piece I call Free. It consists of 24 screen shots, all total. I probably should have done more than that, now that I look at it, but it’s a little late for that now! I have higher resolution screen shots (1280×1024px) if you would like to see a few. Just drop me a line, if so.

About Behind the Art

Behind the Art will hopefully be a monthly feature of a piece of my completed artwork in step by step screen shots, when digital, or photographs, when traditional. On occasion, my writing processes will be featured. If you would like additional information about the artwork in this entry or this feature as a whole, feel free to contact me.

I like it! I’m doing a little bit of this for a class this semester so I’ll have to bug you later on for advice.

Though for now I’d be happy knowing how you built up your flames.

Justin, feel free to “bug” all you want. :) I won’t consider it bugging! As for the flames, I used one stock image for them–this one, to be precise. I took out the parts of it that I didn’t want, as seen in the slide show, and actually duplicated the part I did want three times (thus three different layers of the explosion flames). I colored one slightly differently; that’s why you see the touch of pink among the flames.

I made a specific brush to erase close to the flames and to clone other parts. To keep the flames “strong” looking, two of the flame layers were placed under the leather-like texture that covered the rest of the image. One flame layer, however, was kept above it.

Hope that helps. :)
