To Swim Freely by Lelia Thomas

Along the edge of a rocky shore,
Walks a girl whose dress is white, as ivory bone–
Her russet hair and simple fabrics wind-thrown
As she searches for seashells before
The sand-kissing sea foam, miles away from an ocean floor
Where fishes dance in rainbow colors, together and alone
And in her young mind–dancing, swimming–into a blue unknown
She wishes to dance with them, to hear dolphin calls and crashing waves’ roar.

But such things are limited to wild imaginations
The artist’s dreams of life and death, reality and things unseen
To dream of rainbow-colored dances and coldwater sensations
And dining among the sirens, with their murderous queen
Such things are only dreams on a rocky shore; a creator’s revelations
From a girl whose eyes are deep, wise and darkly green.

Oh, how we sometimes wish to swim beyond our mortal skins.
