Three Knights by Lelia Thomas

Three knights there were from Vanishmore,
Of blade, steel brow, and loyal oath.
They rested by yon eastern shore
With blankets drawn and bellies full.

All weary, on the ground they lay,
On grass, on pebble, and dampened leaf.
So cold it was this month of May,
As they closed their eyes for peaceful sleep.

No morn did come for these three knights,
Of hope, honor, and chivalry.
They disappeared ‘neath northern lights
With only fire ashes in their wake.

Some say their spirits yet live on,
In sky, in wind, and babbling brook.
I say they stretch arms to the Sun,
Their leafy green eyes upon us look.
