Sweet Summertime by Lelia Thomas

Hot summer days filled with heady
Scents of fresh-cut grass
And children’s laughter on the gale.
There’s little trouble with spattering
Sprinklers spraying upon purple clematis
Under the sun.

And if I could capture one moment
In a bottle of the sweetest wine,
It would be now, when no
Worries afflict the mind. With this
Summer heat drying the tongue
Under the sun.

People walk down neighborhood streets
As active as the worker ants.
One’s off to work, another to play,
But all seem to stop, in honor of summer,
At the poorly-built lemonade stands
Under the sun.

Written in 2004, this is in tribute to summertime. So often in my life, I find the seasons correlate with the moods I’m in (or maybe it’s vice-versa, no?). Summertime is a time of life, growth, and joy to me.
