Lover’s Darkness by Lelia Thomas

Turn down the lights.
I have the fire that you want.
No need for worries now,
When desires are running high.
No need for fear,
When the night is coming on.

The night is ours to be had–
A time just for lovers,
Such as you and I,
Beneath the gentle covers.

Take my hand and come with me.
Watch my hips move;
Stare me in the eye.
Tonight my love I will prove.

Whisper a chorus of vows,
In the vigor of darkness.
Promise yourself to me,
And remind me of Heaven’s caress.

Love sings a song I know.
So come take me away, my lover,
And ease my fears during the storm.
Inspire me to write poetry as no other.

Turn down the lights.
I have the fire that you want.
No need for worries now,
When desires are running high.
No need for fear,
When the night is coming on.

I wrote this in 2004 in honor of the safety and security one can find in true monogamy. So often in modern society, we are told and pushed into believing monogamy kills passion and fun. In reality, we should take into consideration that security is where confidence blossoms. When I wrote this poem, I was not in this sort of relationship (and I was entirely aware of that), but I knew what I would want. Having found that since, I know it’s not worth ever going back to precarious, meaningless times.
