Lone Shadow by Lelia Thomas

I’m a lone shadow,
Captured by soles.
I’m a lone shadow,
Trailing the earth.
I’m a lone shadow,
And I can be no more.
In morn, I taste the dew of grass.
The sun high above me glares.
He frightens me with his brightness
And catches me unawares.
At noonday, he takes me,
Imprisons me in starkness,
Clothes me in light I cannot see—
And I, to him, am so worthless.
By nightfall, the moon rises with sageness,
Shining as I walk the ground—
Sky-held and faceless,
Afraid of the east, where sun is found.
I’m a lone shadow,
Enslaved by time.
And when the sun comes
I can be no more.
