Belonging by Lelia Thomas

You’d seen it before—
Among the table’s coffee stains,
But still couldn’t believe it when he struck,
The pain driving through your face.

It’s just the stains of life, some say,
But he isn’t worth your time.
All his lies and the fake tears cried,
They finally crossed the line.

The fist, the bruise, the break—
His apologies are worthless.
So pack those bags and travel on,
Leaving behind the shattered glass.

“You’ll come back,? he says, leaning on the doorframe.
And you hope this time he’s wrong.
Don’t endure another break
From the place where you belong.
